The Kansas City Chiefs’ general manager, Brett Veach, hinted that tight end Travis Kelce was not competing at his best during the team’s Super Bowl defeat. In an episode of the NFL podcast “The Insiders,” Veach revealed that Kelce was battling a significant illness before the February 9 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Veach did not specify the nature of Kelce’s illness, but stated that it wouldn’t have changed the outcome of the game. He also acknowledged that Kelce made some critical mistakes on the field, including struggling to motivate his teammates and keep them calm under pressure.
When asked about Kelce’s future with the team, Veach expressed confidence that he would be back for the next season. “We anticipate Travis being back,” he said. Veach did not rule out retirement speculation, but suggested that Kelce was taking things one step at a time.
Despite speculations surrounding Kelce’s health and potential retirement, Veach emphasized his commitment to having Kelce return in 2024. The team is expected to start preseason training with Kelce wearing his iconic jersey number 87.
