Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Status Uncertain After Injured Ankle

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes left Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns due to an injured right ankle. Mahomes stated that he was unclear whether he would be available to play next Saturday against the Houston Texans.

Mahomes, who suffered the injury after getting hit while throwing a fourth-down pass, believes that removing himself from the game was the “smart decision.” The Chiefs’ coach, Andy Reid, confirmed that Mahomes’ ankle is not broken but said it’s sore.

Reid also stated that Mahomes could have stayed in the game, but ultimately decided to pull him for backup quarterback Carson Wentz. However, when asked if he should have fought for the chance to stay, Mahomes replied, “There was no need for that.” The play that injured Mahomes involved being hit from behind by Cleveland’s Dalvin Tomlinson while also getting hit high by Mike Hall.

Despite his injury, Mahomes praised Wentz, saying he did a great job moving the football and putting them in a position to win. However, Mahomes acknowledged that he needs to work on trusting the offense and going through his progressions to make plays.

Reid defended the team’s playcalling, stating that they need to improve throwing the ball and running plays. The Chiefs will now focus on rehabilitating Mahomes’ ankle ahead of their upcoming game against the Texans.
