The Kansas City Chiefs have reached a record-breaking four-year, $94 million contract extension with right guard Trey Smith, making him the highest-paid interior lineman in NFL history. The deal includes $70 million guaranteed, the most guaranteed money ever awarded to an NFL guard.
Smith, 26, was one of two players tagged by the franchise earlier this year and had a one-year deal worth $23.4 million, which allowed the Chiefs to negotiate with him for a longer-term contract before Tuesday’s deadline. This move completes the Chiefs’ revamp of their offensive line, designed to better support quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The new deal will see Smith play alongside a projected five-man lineup that includes Jaylon Moore, Kingsley Suamataia, Creed Humphrey, and Jawaan Taylor. The team had doubled its efforts to improve their biggest roster need in the recent draft, selecting left tackle Josh Simmons with their first-round pick.
Smith, who entered the league in 2021 after being diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs, has been a reliable player for the Chiefs, starting 80 of 81 games. He was a first-time Pro-Bowler last season and will continue to be a core contributor under the new deal.
