A recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine has debunked a common claim by anti-vaccine activists that childhood vaccines contain toxic amounts of aluminum, which can lead to autoimmune disorders and other health problems. Researchers examined vaccination records from over 1.2 million children between ages 2 and 2018 and found no correlation between aluminum exposure and an increased risk of developing autoimmune conditions, allergies, or neurodevelopmental disorders.
The study, conducted in Denmark, also discovered that even small increases in aluminum exposure through vaccines were not associated with a significant increase in risk for these conditions. However, the researchers noted that some rare outcomes may have shown small relative increases, which could not be statistically excluded.
This finding is significant because it challenges the claims made by anti-vaccine activists and organizations such as the Make America Healthy Again movement. In another related development, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s vaccine advisers have voted to no longer recommend flu shots containing a preservative called thimerosal, which has been linked to concerns about autism despite being widely discredited.
