Wild chimpanzees consume up to two units of alcohol daily by eating ripe, fermented fruit, a study has found. The research suggests that humans may have inherited our taste for alcohol from common primate ancestors who relied on fermented fruit as a source of sugar and alcohol. Analyzing fruits like figs and plums in Côte d’Ivoire and Uganda, the team measured 14 grams of ethanol per day, equivalent to nearly two UK units or one 330ml bottle of lager. This discovery adds weight to the “drunken monkey” hypothesis, which proposes that our appetite for alcohol was inherited from primate ancestors.
