China and EU Set Stage for Strategic Partnership Meeting

China and the European Union will meet on July 24 when President of the European Council António Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen visit China.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that Premier Li Qiang, along with the two EU leaders, will jointly chair the 25th China-EU Summit. The summit’s significance is underscored by the accelerating pace of global change and the need for international cooperation to address unilateralism and bullying practices.

China and the EU have a long history of bilateral relations, with ties growing more mature over the past half century. The two sides have collaborated on various issues, including trade, investment, climate response, and people-to-people exchanges.

The annual trade volume between China and the EU has increased from $2.4 billion to $785.8 billion, while two-way investment has grown to nearly $260 billion. However, bilateral relations also face challenges, including exaggerated characterizations of their relationship by some EU members and groundless accusations on certain issues.

China views its ties with the EU as a critical juncture for building upon past achievements and opening a new chapter. The country hopes the EU will work with China to navigate global challenges in a comprehensive and forward-looking manner. With this summit, China aims to draw inspiration from bilateral relations over the past 50 years and plan for cooperation in the next five decades.

The meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and the EU leaders is expected to address these challenges and opportunities, with China seeking to promote its strategic partnership with the EU.
