China and Vietnam Sign Supply Chain, Railway Deals Amid US Trade Tensions

China and Vietnam signed dozens of cooperation agreements during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the Southeast Asian nation. The deals cover production and supply chains as well as railway cooperation, but details on their content are unclear.

The agreements come amid growing trade tensions between Beijing and Washington, which has threatened Vietnamese exports with tariffs of up to 145%. Vietnam is also negotiating a reduction in US tariffs of 46%.

The visit by Xi Jinping marks an effort to strengthen ties between the two Communist-run countries. Earlier this week, Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son said that the two nations were expecting to sign around 40 cooperation deals.

The agreements include those signed between trade and defence ministries, as well as chambers of commerce from both countries. However, no financial commitments have been disclosed.
