Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has explained Beijing’s support for Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, revealing that China fears US leverage would be increased if Russia were to lose. In a conversation with EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, Wang said China cannot afford a Russian loss due to the potential empowerment of the US.
Beijing has denied supplying weapons or components to Moscow but acknowledges the significant technology transfer between the two countries. The EU has called on Beijing to stop its support for Russia’s drone production industry, citing that 80% of Russia’s war material components come from China.
In a statement, Kallas urged Wang to end China’s “distortive practices” and restrictions on rare earth exports, which pose risks to European companies and global supply chains. The EU is set to vote on blacklisting two small Chinese banks for flouting sanctions on Russia, with measures including cessation of Russian fossil fuel imports into Europe.
