China has reaffirmed its diplomatic and economic support for Russia, despite maintaining a neutral stance on the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to Moscow comes amidst uncertainty surrounding a proposed ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.
According to Chinese officials, talks with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov will focus on strategic cooperation and international issues. However, the timing of Wang’s visit has been overshadowed by concerns over the truce, including its implementation, duration, and scope.
US President Donald Trump recently expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, questioning Zelenskyy’s credibility and highlighting growing tensions within NATO. China, meanwhile, has provided diplomatic backing and economic support to Russia since the invasion began three years ago.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that Beijing’s relationship with Russia does not target a third party and should not be affected by any third party. The visit emphasizes efforts to deepen strategic coordination and expand cooperation in regional and international matters, including trade in energy and consumer goods.
North Korea has also expressed support for Russia’s war in Ukraine, following reports of additional troops being sent to Russia in response to heavy casualties among Russian forces.
