China has launched a monitoring system to track pneumonia of unknown origin, aiming to prepare for the expected rise in respiratory diseases during the winter months. The move follows five years of improved preparedness since the emergence of COVID-19.
The National Disease Control and Prevention Administration will establish protocols for laboratories to report cases and disease control agencies to verify and handle them. This system is part of China’s efforts to combat emerging respiratory infectious diseases, including rhinovirus and human metapneumovirus.
Data shows an upward trend in acute respiratory infections from December 16-22. Kan Biao, a government official, stated that China is likely to see more cases this year but noted the number would be smaller than last year’s.
Cases of human metapneumovirus have seen an increase among people under 14, particularly in northern provinces. A hospital expert warned against using antiviral drugs without a vaccine, as there are no official treatments for the virus.
