China has denied claims that Chinese citizens are fighting on behalf of Russia in Ukraine, following a statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Zelenskiy claimed that Ukrainian intelligence had information about 155 Chinese citizens who were recruited through social media to fight for Russian forces.
In response, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian urged relevant parties to avoid “irresponsible remarks” and reiterated the country’s support for a peaceful settlement of the crisis. China has maintained close ties with Russia, particularly in its “no-limits” partnership, but has not publicly criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
China had previously dismissed Zelenskiy’s claims as “groundless”, stating that it always requests its citizens to stay away from armed conflict zones and never participates in military action on either side. The country remains committed to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict, while urging all parties to refrain from inflammatory statements.
