A massive gold deposit discovered in China’s Hunan province has sent shockwaves through the global mining industry, with estimates suggesting a value of approximately €76 billion. The discovery, made by geologists from the Hunan Provincial Geological Bureau, is believed to be the world’s largest gold reserve, containing an estimated 1,100 tonnes of precious metal.
The deposit, located in the Wangu gold field, boasts exceptional quality, with each tonne of ore yielding up to 138 grams of gold. This concentration is significantly higher than typical mining operations, making it a significant find for China’s domestic reserves.
However, the challenges of extracting gold from depths of 2,000-3,000 meters are substantial, and the discovery will only satisfy China’s gold appetite for approximately 18 months. The country currently ranks sixth globally in terms of gold reserves, with Australia and Russia holding significantly more than China.
