China Downplays Tariff Risk Amid US Trade Tensions

China has played down the risk of damage to its exports from Donald Trump’s tariffs, with officials saying “the sky won’t fall” as stock markets rose amid signs of a retreat on electronics restrictions.

The US president claimed his strategy was working, citing record levels of investment. However, consumers are starting to feel the impact of trade tensions, with Sony increasing the price of its PlayStation 5 by 25% in some markets.

China has diversified its trade away from the US and retaliated forcefully with 125% levies on US imports against Washington’s total of 145%. The country remains committed to strengthening its economy despite Trump’s tariffs.
