China has publicly exposed three US National Security Agency (NSA) employees accused of hacking the Asian Winter Games in Harbin, a move seen as a major escalation in the ongoing cyber espionage rivalry between the two countries. Chinese authorities claim the hacks targeted sensitive systems holding personal information of event participants.
The Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, Lin Jian, described the incidents as posing “severe risks to China’s critical infrastructure, national defense, finance, and citizens’ personal data.” This move marks a significant shift in the cat-and-mouse game between US and Chinese intelligence agencies.
