China Grapples with Resurgence of Human Metapneumovirus Amid Covid-19 Pandemic

China is facing an outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a viral respiratory infection that can cause flu-like symptoms, five years after the Covid-19 pandemic. Reports suggest hospitals and crematories are overwhelmed as multiple viruses, including influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Covid-19, circulate.

The Chinese government has not officially declared a state of emergency, but health officials are closely monitoring the situation. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies HMPV as a respiratory virus that can cause severe illness in vulnerable populations.

Health experts warn that HMPV can be misdiagnosed or mistreated if patients do not receive proper care. A Shanghai hospital expert has warned against using antiviral drugs without medical supervision, citing the lack of an effective vaccine for the virus.

China is likely to see a surge in respiratory infections during winter and spring, with recent cases detected including pathogens like rhinovirus and HMPV. The government aims to improve preparedness by establishing a monitoring system for pneumonia of unknown origin and setting up protocols for handling unknown pathogens.
