Emergency teams in Sichuan province searched for 28 missing people after a landslide triggered by heavy rain buried several houses under the earth. One person has died, and nearly 1,000 personnel, including armed police and medical professionals, are involved in the rescue efforts.
The landslide, which was about 1.2 kilometres long, took with it over 100,000 cubic metres of earth and debris. Local officials and experts used drones and life-detection radars to locate any signs of life among the rubble.
Rescue teams managed to evacuate around 360 people and rescued two injured individuals. Authorities attributed the disaster to recent heavy rainfall and local geological conditions.
Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong visited the affected area, urging authorities to make every effort to find the missing people. He also emphasized the need for scientific assessment to ensure the operation’s safety and prevent another disaster.
The Chinese government has allocated 10.8 million euros to support disaster relief and recovery efforts in the region. Landslides are a common occurrence in China, particularly in mountainous areas, and have caused fatalities in the past.
