China Launches 1km Space Solar Array Project

China has embarked on a groundbreaking project to build a 1km-wide solar array in space, dubbed the “Manhattan Project of energy.” The ambitious endeavor aims to harness solar power from outer space and beam it back to Earth, providing continuous and reliable energy.

The concept is based on the principle of space-based solar power (SBSP), which involves collecting solar energy in geostationary orbit and converting it into microwaves before transmission back to Earth. This technology promises to be more efficient than traditional photovoltaic panels, with an expected 10-fold increase in efficiency.

The project has been hailed as a significant leap forward in the transition to net-zero energy. Unlike traditional solar panels, space-based solar panels are unaffected by day-night cycles or weather patterns, making them more reliable and efficient.

According to Long Lehao, a senior Chinese scientist behind the project, “It is as significant as moving the Three Gorges Dam to a geostationary orbit 36,000km above the Earth.” The Three Gorges Dam on China’s Yangtze river is the world’s largest hydropower plant and serves as an analogy for this ambitious undertaking.

While the viability of space solar power remains to be seen, companies like Space Solar are pushing forward with innovative technologies. For example, their 360° wireless power transmission technology holds great promise. Dr. Paul Bate, CEO of the UK Space Agency, describes it as a “game changer” that demonstrates the sector’s leading position in this new energy revolution.

As global electricity demand is expected to double by 2050, space solar power may play a crucial role in meeting this growing need for clean energy. The project’s success could pave the way for a safer and more secure world where clean energy is available to everyone.
