China has brought online a massive national research network, designed to support experimentation on future network designs and improve data transmission quality. The “China Environment for Network Innovation” (CENI) spans over 40 cities, targeting AI and deterministic networking. In an early demonstration, researchers successfully transferred 72 terabytes of data across 1,000 kilometers in about 1.6 hours, reaching speeds close to 100 Gbps. This network is built to host thousands of parallel virtual networks, allowing researchers to run isolated experiments on shared physical infrastructure. Deterministic networking aims to guarantee latency, jitter, and packet delivery characteristics across long distances, a key goal for CENI’s designers. With significant resources committed to exploring future networks, China is taking steps towards supporting data-intensive science and AI workloads at a national level.
