A high-ranking Chinese official, Wang Xiaohong, is seeking clarification from the US government on its stance regarding chemicals used to make fentanyl amid a trade war between the world’s largest economies.
China produces precursors that flow to Mexican drug cartels, which then manufacture and smuggle fentanyl into the US. The White House has repeatedly criticized China for failing to curb the flow of precursor chemicals.
As part of its efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking, the Trump administration imposed 20% tariffs on China. The US has since increased tariffs to 145%, while China retaliated with 125% tariffs on American goods. Beijing is now willing to meet with senior US officials in a neutral country to discuss cooperation on fentanyl, according to reports.
