Reports of rising flu-like cases in China have sparked international concerns about a potential pandemic. However, medical experts say the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is no COVID-19 and should not cause widespread panic.
Dr. Paul Auwaerter, clinical director at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s division of infectious diseases, explains that HMPV commonly causes upper respiratory tract infections like bronchitis, characterized by a cough and sinus issues. He emphasizes that while the virus can be serious for certain groups, such as young children and elderly adults with health problems, its symptoms are generally mild.
The virus has been present since at least 2001 and has infected millions of people who have developed immunity over time. Experts stress that HMPV is not a new or unusual virus, but rather a common one that can still pose a risk if the population’s herd immunity levels are low.
China reports a decline in HMPV cases among residents in its northern provinces, where respiratory infections are rising. Chinese health officials note that the number of patients seeking medical help remains lower compared to the same period last year.
However, some experts call for greater transparency from China regarding pathogen information and genetic research to confirm whether it is indeed a new virus or an old variant with unknown characteristics. Dr. Ho Mei-Shang, a research fellow emeritus at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences in Taipei, suggests that COVID-19 prevention measures during the pandemic may have contributed to the current surge in cases by curbing the spread of diseases and reducing herd immunity.
With no real treatment or vaccine for HMPV, doctors advise patients with breathing difficulties to seek medical attention immediately.
