China has banned exports of certain rare minerals to the United States in response to new restrictions on semiconductor chip and equipment sales to China. The move was largely seen as a reaction to US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo’s announcement that the country aims to impede China’s ability to develop advanced technologies.
The ban applies to minerals including gallium, germanium, and antimony, which have potential military applications. The Chinese government claims the exports were “maliciously suppressed” by the US, while Washington says its restrictions are aimed at protecting national security.
The move highlights growing tensions between the two countries over trade and technology. China controls about 60% of global rare earth mineral production and 85% of its processing, making it a crucial player in the supply chain.
US President-elect Donald Trump is expected to take office next month and may continue or increase the Biden administration’s efforts to curb Beijing’s development of military equipment and AI systems that pose a risk to US national security.
