China Sees Carbon Emissions Peak Before 2030 Deadline

China’s former vice minister of finance, Zhu Guangyao, has cited research showing that the country’s carbon emissions have dropped by 1.6% in the first quarter of 2025 and a further 1% over the past year. This news suggests that China is on track to reach its peak carbon emissions before its 2030 target, which was set as part of its commitments under the Paris Agreement and national climate policy. However, despite this promising acceleration, China’s overall ambition for net-zero carbon emissions by 2060 remains unmet. The country still lags behind in achieving comprehensive climate action, with a ‘poor’ rating on Climate Action Tracker and high levels of global emissions. As the world’s largest carbon emitter, China plays a crucial role in addressing climate change.
