China Successfully Demonstrates Artificial Photosynthesis in Space

Chinese astronauts have reportedly demonstrated artificial photosynthesis technology in orbit, producing oxygen and rocket fuel ingredients. This breakthrough is a significant step towards long-term space exploration.

China has been conducting experiments to produce oxygen onsite in space for long-duration human exploration and habitation. The country initiated its investigation into “extraterrestrial artificial photosynthesis” in 2015. A series of 12 experiments were carried out within a drawer-shaped apparatus in orbit, employing semiconductor catalysts to transform carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and ethylene.

The technology mimics natural photosynthesis through engineered physical and chemical methods, utilizing carbon dioxide resources in confined spaces or extraterrestrial atmospheres to produce oxygen and carbon-based fuels. The device exhibits efficient operation at ambient temperature and pressure, requiring less energy than conventional methods.

This achievement is valuable for long-term space exploration, enabling self-sufficiency and supporting missions like a crewed moon landing by 2030. China’s plans to land astronauts on the lunar surface before 2030 and build an International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) will require significant technological advancements in various areas.

The construction of ILRS, likely between 2028-2035, will involve significant human presence on the Moon, requiring a robust life support system. This development could help China achieve its key goals in the future and pave the way for more ambitious space missions.
