China Unveils Advanced Extravehicular Spacesuit for Space Station

China has achieved a major milestone in its space program with the successful third series of extravehular activities by astronaut Chen Dong on August 15, 2025. The mission marked the first time the new extravehicular spacesuit B has been tested.

According to the China Astronaut Research and Training Center, the suit has supported 20 EVAs and has become the first of its kind to meet its four-year goal of supporting at least 20 EVAs. The suit was worn by 11 astronauts across eight manned space missions and is part of the second-generation Feitian extravehular spacesuit.

The new suit features significant technological advances, including a longer lifespan, improved safety, and increased reliability. It is also designed to be used for at least 15 EVAs during its three-year service life in orbit.

Two new sets of second-generation Feitian extravehular spacesuits, labeled D and E, were delivered to the space station by Tianzhou-9 cargo craft on July 15. The suits have been inspected and are in good condition. They will be gradually used in future EVAs.

The development of advanced extravehicular spacesuits is crucial for China’s space program, providing strong support for EVAs during the construction and operation of its space station.
