Chinese scientists have made a breakthrough in rocket propulsion technology, revealing plans for near-invisible stealth missiles that could “redefine modern warfare”. The new engine uses a unique system to mix helium gas with fuel, directly pressurizing it within the firing engine. This reduces the risk of leaks and allows for more efficient reactions.
The technology was reportedly inspired by a NASA issue with the Boeing spacecraft, which stranded two astronauts on the International Space Station in June 2024. The Chinese researchers transformed this problem into a revolutionary propulsion breakthrough that could also improve space travel.
With the right ratio of helium to fuel, the engine can generate more than three times the thrust as traditional engines. It also has the potential to change speed mid-air, making it harder to track or intercept. This technology could make stealth missiles almost invisible to current early-warning systems, such as SpaceX’s Starshield satellites.
The new engine could have several applications, including reducing the cost of launching rockets into space and improving stealth capabilities in weaponry. China is already planning to use this technology for its secretive “Thousand Sails” satellite constellation and a human base on the moon by 2035.
