China’s AI Industry Hit by Mysterious Deaths of Top Experts

China’s rapid growth in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector has been marred by a series of mysterious deaths among top experts, leaving concerns about the industry’s pressure on researchers and practitioners.

Leading Chinese computer scientist Liu Shaoshan warned that the industry is developing at an “insane pace” with fierce competition, making it difficult for researchers to keep up. The pressure to come up with innovative ideas and complete experiments quickly can be overwhelming, he said.

Liu also highlighted the ethical pressures faced by AI practitioners, as their work has a significant impact on society. As AI use spreads, so does its potential to cause unintended consequences, which can lead to moral dilemmas for those involved.

The South China Morning Post has identified several top AI scientists who died at a relatively young age, many of whom were in their prime and made groundbreaking discoveries in areas such as computer vision, military AI, and medical AI.
