Australia is closely monitoring Chinese military ships entering its waters off the coast, with the vessels adhering to international law but raising concerns about national security. The ships, identified as a People’s Liberation Army-Navy task group, include a frigate, cruiser, and replenishment vessel.
According to an Australian Department of Defense statement, the vessels were spotted in the north-east of Australia and have been traveling through Southeast Asia before entering the country’s maritime approaches. One of the vessels, the Hengyang frigate, transited into Australia’s waters.
New Zealand is also monitoring the situation, with its defense minister stating that the task group has not informed them of their plans or intentions. Both countries are working together to monitor the vessels and ensure they are operating in accordance with international law.
The incident comes after a recent incident where a Chinese fighter plane released flares near an Australian Royal Air Force aircraft, posing a risk to personnel but not causing harm.
