China has launched its Tianwen 2 probe on a mission to explore a quasi-moon and comet, unveiling a “solar wing” in the process. The solar panel array, deployed eight days into the orbit, will provide power for the probe’s journey. Meanwhile, China’s censorship regime is under scrutiny as leaked documents suggest censors are instructed to delete content before reviewing it. In other tech news, Hitachi has developed an AI agent using data from veteran workers, while Amazon Web Services has opened a new region in Taiwan to support its cloud services.
China’s space agency has revealed its Tianwen 2 probe has unfurled a “solar wing”, a circular array of flexible solar panels that will provide power for the mission. The probe launched in May and is currently three million kilometers from Earth, on course to explore the quasi-moon 469219 Kamo’oalewa and comet 311P/PanSTARRS.
The update from China’s National Space Administration comes as the country’s internet censors are under scrutiny. Leaked documents suggest that censors are instructed to delete content before reviewing it, raising concerns about censorship in China ahead of the June 4 anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.
In other tech news, Hitachi Power Solutions has developed an AI agent using data from veteran workers. The company used logs and other data produced by its systems to train the AI, which is now available for use by its maintenance staff.
Additionally, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has opened a new region in Taiwan to support its cloud services. This move comes as China’s tech industry continues to grow, with AWS investing heavily in its presence in the country.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics has adopted the Cline AI coding tool, which is used by Microsoft’s VS Code. The adoption is seen as an indication of how Samsung creates its products.
Equinix has also acquired three data centers from Total Information Management in the Philippines, providing it with additional capacity and land for expansion.
