Australia and New Zealand have confirmed that a Chinese surface action group is operating off the coast of Tasmania, within Australia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The formation, dubbed Chinese Task Group 107, was spotted approximately 160 nautical miles east of Hobart on Tuesday morning.
The Australian Defense Department issued an update stating that they continue to monitor the task group and are coordinating closely with New Zealand Defence Force. Both countries have emphasized the importance of transparency, safety, and professionalism in military operations.
New Zealand released a landing page on its website dedicated to releases on the PLAN task group, including images taken from the air of the Chinese vessels. The NZDF stated that personnel on Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) frigate HMNZS Te Kaha observed Zunyi firing its main gun during live firing exercises.
Meanwhile, the US and Japan have begun a ballistic missile defense drill in Japan, tying together Japanese and American units for Fleet Synthetic Training – Joint 25-71. The exercise aims to improve joint operational capabilities and interoperability in ballistic missile defense.
China’s surface task group has raised tensions in the region, highlighting the need for cooperation and transparency among nations.
