Chinese Architect Liu Jiakun Wins Prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize

Chinese architect Liu Jiakun has been awarded the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize for his work that celebrates everyday life and communities. Liu, who is the 54th laureate of the award, was chosen by a jury chaired by Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena for his ability to place people at the forefront in his four-decade career.

Liu’s work focuses on designing public spaces that reflect the interests of local communities, rather than just aesthetics. His designs often incorporate traditional Chinese elements and philosophies, such as the concept of “wu-wei” (non-action), which emphasizes harmony with nature and community.

The jury praised Liu for his ability to imagine and construct new worlds without being constrained by specific styles or methods. Instead, he uses a strategy that evaluates each project’s unique characteristics and requirements, creating intelligent solutions that balance density and public spaces.

Liu’s work also highlights the importance of identity and how it relates to both individual and collective sense of belonging to a place. He revisits Chinese traditions while introducing innovative elements, creating new architecture that is both historical and forward-thinking.

The jury citation notes that Liu Jiakun seeks a technology that is “appropriate” for local conditions, using materials and craftsmanship to create buildings that are simple yet meaningful. His work also explores the relationship between built and natural environments, promoting a reciprocal relation that reflects ancient Chinese philosophy.

Liu’s win is seen as a significant contribution to the field of architecture, as he has shown how design can mediate between reality and idealism, elevate local solutions into universal visions, and promote socially and environmentally just worlds.
