A makeshift car lot in a working-class neighborhood of Mexico City has become a hub for Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD. The dealership, which sells the affordable Dolphin Mini, is one of dozens springing up across Mexico as Chinese carmakers like BYD, Chery, Geely, and SAIC establish a presence in North America.
The rapid expansion into Mexico raises concerns about potential competition in the US market, where prices for battery-powered vehicles are currently higher. The Dolphin Mini, priced at around $18,000, is an attractive option, with some $10,000 less than the cheapest comparable vehicle available in the United States.
