China’s “Black Myth: Wukong”, a game inspired by the classic novel “Journey to the West,” has made a significant splash in the gaming world. At The Game Awards (TGA) 2024, it won the Best Action Game award and the Players’ Voice award, voted by fans.
The game’s commercial success is impressive, with $53 million in pre-sales and 4.5 million copies sold within 24 hours worldwide. Developed over six years by Game Science, “Black Myth: Wukong” represents a milestone for China’s gaming industry.
Inspired by traditional Chinese culture, the game features stunning visuals and immersive combat mechanics, drawing from the legendary Monkey King. The art design team drew inspiration from 36 landmarks across China, creating a virtual library of ancient architectural heritage.
Authentic traditional Chinese music, including Shanbei storytelling, is also featured in the game. The makers aimed to tell a Chinese story with world-class quality, technology, and visual standards.
Although “Black Myth: Wukong” was not crowned Game of the Year, losing to “Astro Bot”, its awards are a testament to its impact on the gaming industry and worldwide interest in traditional Chinese culture.
