Chinese New Year Celebrations Mark Beginning of Snake Year

Hundreds of millions gathered worldwide to celebrate the start of the Chinese Lunar calendar’s new year, ushering in the Year of the Snake. The first new moon marked the beginning of spring and symbolized good luck, rebirth, and regality.

Born in this year are said to be resilient and courageous, with strong interpersonal skills and leadership qualities. However, some people born in these years are considered intimidating or sinister by others.

According to feng shui consultant Thierry Chow, “significant clashes and conflicts” may arise this year, leading to a slightly more chaotic atmosphere worldwide.

The Lunar New Year celebrates the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar’s start, marked by customs and traditions such as household cleaning before the holiday and formal celebrations starting with family reunions.

Red decorations, lanterns, and oranges are used to usher in good luck, while public events include lion dances, firework shows, prayers for prosperity, and feasts. The fifteenth day is celebrated as the Lantern Festival.

The occasion is widely observed not only in China but also in Vietnam, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Singapore, among other countries.

Each zodiac animal has its unique characteristics, with the snake representing growth, flexibility, and tolerance.
