Chinese Spouse Departs Hours Before Deportation Order

A Chinese woman who was ordered deported from Taiwan after expressing support for China’s “military unification” of the island left the country on Tuesday evening, hours before her scheduled deportation.

Liu Zhenya, a Taiwanese national’s wife, had been facing deportation since March 15 after she advocated for China’s military reunification with Taiwan in a television interview. However, she decided to leave the country voluntarily on Tuesday, citing concerns about leaving behind a “stain” that might affect her if she ever returned.

Liu’s decision comes after she appeared before reporters at Taipei Songshan Airport and said she would return to China with her head held high, emphasizing that her departure was not an admission of wrongdoing. She also expressed hope that the National Immigration Agency and the Ministry of the Interior will handle any future applications for reunification with her family in accordance with the law.

Liu’s deportation order was issued after she posted videos on social media that were deemed to have violated regulations governing Chinese residents living in Taiwan. The Mainland Affairs Council said Liu’s remarks “advocated the elimination of our country’s sovereignty” and are “not tolerated by Taiwanese society.”

The Supreme Administrative Court rejected an appeal by Liu’s husband and children, who sought to suspend the deportation order citing concerns about the legality of the MOI’s decision. The court ruled that Liu’s actions posed a potential threat to social stability and had a serious impact on the public interest.

Liu’s departure marks another failed attempt by her family to challenge the deportation order, which was issued after she expressed support for China’s military reunification with Taiwan in a series of videos viewed by many and widely circulated across media platforms.
