Chip Kelly’s departure from Ohio State football as the team’s new offensive coordinator has not come as a surprise, according to coach Ryan Day. In fact, it was part of a long-planned move that would give Kelly an opportunity to join the Las Vegas Raiders in the NFL.
Day discussed the situation with the Joel Klatt Show on Sunday, highlighting the team’s success and how it aligns with Kelly’s goals. The Buckeyes won their ninth national championship on January 20th, just one season into the partnership between Day and Kelly.
The connection between Day and Kelly dates back to their hometown of Manchester, New Hampshire. They coached together under Kelly at the University of New Hampshire from 1998-2001, with Day later working as an assistant coach for the Eagles and 49ers.
Day’s tenure has seen great success, and Kelly is now set to join him in the NFL as a high-paid coordinator. The two are excited about their new partnership, which will likely lead to a championship win in the years to come.
