Michael Bishop, a volunteer at his home church of Chester Baptist in Ackerman, Miss., has been instrumental in helping the local Choctaw County Food Ministry since its inception in 1997. As operations manager, Bishop oversees the pickup of fresh food from donors, takes inventory of goods, and manages food drives and fundraisers.
Bishop’s dedication to the ministry began when Pastor Rob Falk asked for his help after learning about the ministry’s need for volunteers. Since then, Bishop has become a vital part of the organization, dedicating countless hours to helping those in need. He estimates that over 400 people in Choctaw County are assisted by the ministry each month.
The food ministry receives donations from retailers such as Walmart and Kroger, as well as monthly donations from the Mississippi Food Network. While inflation has reduced donations, Bishop’s organization remains one of the few food pantries in the region doing well.
Bishop credits his success to the community’s support and his team’s hard work. “I know God is keeping this place running since 1997,” he says, reflecting on his faith and commitment to the ministry. As operations manager, Bishop is deeply committed to providing essential services to those in need, ensuring that every person receives food and support they require.
Under Bishop’s leadership, the Choctaw County Food Ministry continues to thrive, serving as a beacon of hope for those struggling financially. With its dedicated staff and volunteers, the organization remains a vital resource for the community.
