Chrome for Android Adds Biometric Verification for Password Autofill

Google Chrome on Android is getting a much-needed security boost with the addition of biometric verification before autofilling passwords. Starting soon, users will be required to authenticate with fingerprint, face, or screen lock before Chrome fills in their saved login credentials.

The update is rolling out in Google Password Manager and is expected to appear in Chrome more widely shortly. This change enhances security by preventing auto-fill without user authentication, reducing the risk of password theft if your phone falls into the wrong hands.

Currently, Google offers a similar feature through its Password Manager app, but it only applies inside apps. With this new update, biometric verification will be mandatory for all browsers, including Chrome.

The setting is expected to be renamed “Verify it’s you to autofill passwords” and will appear at the bottom of the main settings page within Google Password Manager. Although the functionality remains largely the same, users can now expect an additional layer of security before their passwords are filled in automatically.

No official release date has been announced yet for when this feature will be widely available in Google Chrome for Android. However, with its appearance in some users’ Google Password Manager settings, it’s likely that the update will roll out soon.
