The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is offering buyouts to its entire workforce in an effort to align with US President Donald Trump’s national security priorities, according to two sources. The move comes as part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to downsize the bureaucracy and install loyalists.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe has vowed to make the agency “responsive” to the Administration’s goals. The buyout offers are part of a strategy to “infuse the Agency with renewed energy,” according to a statement from the CIA spokesperson.
This move is not surprising, given the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the size of the government and install loyalists. Earlier this week, the White House offered 2 million civilian federal workers the opportunity to stop working and receive pay and benefits through September 30.
Unions representing US government employees have filed a lawsuit to block the Trump administration’s plan to offer buyouts to federal workers. Ratcliffe was confirmed as CIA Director days after Trump took office for his second term, following a background in intelligence work.
