A certain noisy insect is heading back to the Miami Valley. Cicadas from Brood XIV are expected to emerge in Butler, Clinton, and Warren counties once temperatures rise. According to the US Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service, these cicadas will appear in late April or early May and leave by June’s end.
The region experienced a similar brood in 2008, but it remained dormant underground since then. Once the cicadas mate and lay their eggs, The Nature Conservancy notes that the newly hatched insects will begin to die off shortly after emerging onto the ground.
