Cincinnati freshman football player Jeremiah Kelly, an early enrollee who participated in spring practice, has died unexpectedly at his off-campus residence. The cause of death has not been disclosed by the school.
Kelly, an 18-year-old offensive lineman from Avon, Ohio, led his high school team to a perfect 16-0 record and state championship last fall. His teammates, coaches, and university officials have expressed shock and sadness at his sudden passing.
“We’re heartbroken,” said Cincinnati coach Scott Satterfield in a statement. “In the short time Jeremiah has spent with our team, he’s made a real impact both on the field and in our locker room.”
Cincinnati athletic director John Cunningham also paid tribute to Kelly, saying: “We’ve suffered a heartbreaking loss today… We’ll do everything we can to support the Kelly family and our Bearcats student-athletes during this difficult time.”
