Citi has added American Airlines as a 1:1 transfer partner to its ThankYou Rewards program. This move allows cardholders with the new Citi Strata Elite card and two other premium-tier cards, the Citi Strata Premier and Citi Prestige, to transfer their points directly to American’s AAdvantage loyalty program.
The new agreement makes Citi the only major credit card issuer to offer direct transfers to American Airlines. Points will be transferred at a 1:1 ratio, meaning 1,000 Citi ThankYou Rewards points become 1,000 AAdvantage miles.
In addition to the transfer partnership, Citi has also launched the Citi Strata Elite Card, which comes with annual day passes to American’s Admirals Club network. This feature is available only to new cardholders of the Strata Elite Card, while existing cardholders of the Strata Premier and Prestige cards can still transfer their points.
The partnership marks a significant milestone for Citi and American Airlines, as it brings the airline into the fold of major credit card issuers with direct transfers. The move is expected to benefit travelers who want to redeem their points on American flights, particularly those looking to book award flights on the airline’s premium products like Flagship Suites.
With this new partnership, American Airlines gains a transfer partner that can help its customers earn and redeem miles more efficiently. As Citi head of U.S. branded cards and lending Pam Habner noted, “This is an exciting first step in our broader partnership with American Airlines.”
