City-Killer Asteroid Threatens Earth from Lunar Impact

A large asteroid, known as 2024 YR4, is currently hurtling toward the moon. While initially thought to be on a collision course with Earth, new data suggests it may instead impact the lunar surface. This could potentially lead to debris being ejected into space and impacting Earth-orbiting satellites and spacecraft.

Researchers have found that if the asteroid were to hit the moon, up to 10% of the resulting material could be directed towards Earth due to its gravity. This could cause significant damage to satellites in low orbit, potentially rendering them unusable for extended periods.

According to simulations, a single day’s worth of damage from this debris field could last for a decade. Small particles could also impact sensitive components on spacecraft, leading to costly repairs or even complete system failures.

NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office has declined to comment on potential response options for the asteroid, but experts warn that global space agencies should be prepared to develop deflection strategies for asteroids heading towards both the moon and Earth.
