Manchester City suffered a humiliating 5-1 loss to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday, further damaging their title hopes. The defeat left City 15 points behind leader Liverpool with only 14 matches remaining.
City’s struggles came after they conceded a goal inside two minutes and were overwhelmed in the second half. Arsenal’s Thomas Partey scored a deflected shot in the 57th minute, and the team went on to add further goals from Myles Lewis-Skelly, Kai Havertz, and Ethan Nwaneri.
Manchester United also faced a tough day at home, losing 2-0 to Crystal Palace and extending their seven-home defeat streak. Lisandro Martinez suffered a serious left knee injury in the loss, and the team’s manager Ruben Amorim called his side “the worst team, maybe, in the history of Manchester United.”
The results mean City are now six points behind Liverpool and are all but eliminated from winning a fifth consecutive Premier League title. Meanwhile, United has lost seven of their first 13 home games this season, a feat not seen since the 1890s.
Despite the losses, Arsenal’s Declan Rice said that the team had been building momentum towards the match, citing the “fire in your stomach” that they possess going into big matches. The victory leaves Arsenal three points ahead of Nottingham Forest and nine points above City.
Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, secured a 2-0 win over Brentford to end a four-match losing run in the league, with manager Ange Postecoglou praising his team’s “physical effort” in securing the crucial result.
