Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is an upcoming game that combines elements of Final Fantasy XIII and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. After playing the preview, I found it to be an engaging experience despite some initial confusion. The story concept is vague, but the acting is phenomenal, making every character feel authentic.
The gameplay mechanics are reminiscent of Paper Mario, with a battle system that requires timing perfect QTE prompts to inflict maximum damage. Dodging and parrying attacks also offer strategic options, leading to devastating counterattacks or instant death if failed. Character customization and stat allocation provide depth to the game world.
While some areas felt linear, exploration revealed hidden secrets and depth. The underwater zone was a highlight, offering an immersive environment with satisfying combat encounters. A few minor criticisms aside, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has me hooked. With its April 24, 2025 release date on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam, fans of both Final Fantasy XIII and Paper Mario are sure to be excited.
