Windows 10 users leaving behind their old PCs are now staring at shiny new Windows 11 machines. But with great speed comes great responsibility – keeping your new PC’s disk space clean is crucial to maintaining smooth performance.
The problem? Over time, stored cache files can become corrupted and outdated, leading to operational quirks and slower boot times. The good news is that Windows has several built-in utilities to help free up space (and they’re already on your PC).
**How to use the Windows Cleanup recommendations**
1. Click Start > Settings > System > Storage
2. Scroll down to “Cleanup recommendations”
3. Review temporary files in your Downloads folder and the Recycle Bin, and delete any unnecessary ones.
**Using Disk Cleanup**
The Windows Disk Cleanup utility can be accessed by searching for it in the search bar or by using the Run command (Windows key + R). It will identify temporary internet files, setup log files, and various cache files that can be safely deleted to reclaim space.
**Clearing Location Cache**
1. Start > Settings > Privacy & Security > Location history
2. Click “Clear” under Location history
**Flushing DNS Cache**
Press the Windows key + R to open the Run command prompt, type ipconfig/flushdns and press Enter.
By clearing cache files, location data, and flushing the DNS cache, you’ll be able to free up space and keep your new PC running smoothly.
