Clemson Stuns SMU to Secure College Football Playoff Spot

Clemson University kicked off its postseason run with a thrilling 34-31 victory over Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Tigers’ win was sealed by kicker Nolan Houser’s 56-yard field goal after the Mustangs had mounted a comeback.

Despite trailing by 17 points at halftime, SMU launched an 16-play drive that tied the game 31-31. However, Clemson responded well to this setback, with quarterback Cade Klubnik throwing three touchdown passes in the first quarter and giving his team a 21-7 lead.

As the fourth quarter began, SMU reduced the deficit to 10 points. But in what appeared to be an early exit from playoff contention, Clemson thwarted their opponents’ hopes for overtime. The Tigers’ victory now guarantees them a spot in the 2024-25 College Football Playoff and marks their ninth conference title since 2011.

The team will learn the details of their playoff appearance during the upcoming selection show on ESPN at noon on Sunday, December 8.
