Cleveland’s Department of Public Health has issued an alert after detecting a spike in SARS-CoV-2 viral levels in untreated wastewater from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District. The increase in virus levels, which is also high for influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), suggests future spikes in illness, hospitalizations, and transmission.
According to the department, wastewater data reflects community infection trends, including among those who may not seek testing or show symptoms. Residents are urged to consider getting vaccinated or boosted against COVID-19 and influenza, as well as taking precautions with respiratory symptoms.
The Department of Public Health will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates accordingly. Residents can take steps now to prevent further transmission by staying informed and following public health guidelines.
