Rescue efforts for experienced mountaineer Natasha Nagovitsina have been called off in Kyrgyzstan due to the high risk of her death. Nagovitsina, a 47-year-old Russian climber, broke her leg near the summit of Victory Peak on August 12 and has been stranded at 22,965 feet ever since.
Nagovitsina’s husband died four years ago while she was stuck in a difficult situation, and it appears that his efforts to help her have ended in tragedy. An Italian climber named Luca Sinigaglia died attempting to provide aid to Nagovitsina on August 15 after bringing her essential supplies such as food, water, and a tent.
Rescue attempts by both climbing and helicopter teams have failed, including a recent defense ministry helicopter crash that injured four people. The latest attempt was abandoned due to worsening weather conditions, with rescue leader Dmitry Grekov stating that it’s “unrealistic” for Nagovitsina to survive at such an altitude.
A drone mission confirmed Nagovitsina is alive as of Tuesday, but there was no sign of life when the drone flew over on Thursday. The situation remains dire, and further rescue efforts are unlikely.
