A close call between two commercial jets at LaGuardia Airport in New York has prompted calls for changes to air travel in the US, amid heightened public anxiety around flying. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
On May 6, an American Eagle flight was cleared to take off from runway 13, but was stopped due to a United Airlines plane taxiing on the same runway. The planes were about a quarter mile apart when the Republic Airways flight hit the brakes. The FAA is also investigating another radio outage at Newark Liberty International Airport’s air traffic approach control facility.
The incidents come as the summer travel season approaches, highlighting concerns over the safety of the country’s air traffic control system. Despite challenges, officials still claim the system is safe.
