Coke Abandons 25% Reusable Packaging Goal Amid Plastic Pollution Scandal

Coca-Cola has quietly abandoned its promise to achieve a 25% reusable packaging target by 2030, sparking accusations of “greenwashing” from campaigners. The company had previously made a commitment to have 25% of its drinks sold in refillable or returnable containers. However, the page on its website outlining this goal was deleted, and the company now only targets increasing recycled plastic use to 30-35%.

The move comes as global efforts to reduce plastic production stalled at a meeting in South Korea, where nearly 200 nations failed to reach an agreement. Campaigners argue that companies like Coca-Cola should focus on reusable bottle targets instead of relying on recycled single-use items.

“Coca-Cola’s latest move is a masterclass in greenwashing,” said Von Hernandez, global coordinator of the Break Free from Plastic campaign group. “If they can’t even keep their low-bar commitments, how can they claim to be serious about addressing the global plastic crisis?”
